Initial apprenticeship as a nurse (1993 to 1996 in Wilen/Sarnen, canton Obwalden). During this time, he passed theoretical and practical trainings at the Kantonsspital Obwalden in Sarnen, at the Paraplegikerzentrum Notwill, as well as at the Kantonsspital Wolhusen.
After finishing the apprenticeship, he worked at the department for general medicine at the Kantonsspital Luzern. Soon he did a training to become an expert of intensive care (also at LUKS) with graduation in 2000.
Occupation as a coordinator at Swisstransplant at the Universitätsklinik Zürich. Swisstransplant is the federations national allocation site for the lawful allocation of organs.
2003 to 2007: extra-occupational education at the university for social work in Luzern with a degree as Bachelor of Applied Science.
Since 2008: studying Law and political economy at the university of Luzern (during his occupation as teamleader within the department for intensive care at the Kantonsspital Luzern).
In Autumn 2013 Suntharalingam began his master program in Health Science, with special subject economics, at the university of Luzern.
Member of the cantonal parliament of Luzern since 2007 (2004 to 2007: member of the city council of Luzern).
